In this Kit, also published by EDUSLP Services, grade 1 and 2 students have an opportunity to learn more advanced phonological awareness skills, such as sound segmentation and manipulation. There are also many fun games and activities which are focused on helping students transfer their phonological awareness learning to reading and spelling of regular real and nonsense words. This Kit also includes a pre- and post-assessment tool, as well as hundreds of picture cards, which make for excellent visual and kinesthetic cues when engaged in word play.

The Complete Program includes systematic instruction of short vowel, silent-e, vowel teams, bossy-r and multi-syllable reading and writing through games and decodable texts, with word and sentence cards also included! The program is designed for beginning literacy instruction, as well as intervention for older elementary students. There are many opportunities for differentiated teaching, as well as fun, which makes the Direct Route to Reading and Writing Success ideal for most students.

Order Individual Vowel Rule kits and then expand into the complete program as your students learn. These kits will include all of the decodable texts, writing activities, game boards and cards with a focus on one of the vowel rules. Engaging activities help students read and spell real and silly words, including single consonants, blends and digraphs. Phonological awareness tasks for sound segmenting, blending, and manipulation are embedded in many of the tasks.

These one-page texts have been written to help readers practice their decoding skills by focusing on the vowel rules in a cumulative way. Most stories are at least 70% decodable and align with curriculum themes, such as Feelings and Problem Solving, Nature and Community. A question page follows each text, which gives students opportunities to demonstrate comprehension and work on their writing skills. There are 3 levels of text for each rule, ranging from story lengths of less than 50 words, to more than 100 words!

Individual Vowel Rule Texts: $250
To accurately determine if a student would benefit from the DR Program, it is helpful to complete the 7 assessment tasks, which combine to show an individual literacy learning profile. A rubric is used to measure a student's strengths and needs phonological awareness, reading ,and spelling skills . By plotting the scores on the rubric it will be evident where a student stands with respect to benefiting from the Direct Route Program: not yet ready , beyond the need or ready for the program. These informal tasks can be completed in a 30-minute session.
Assessment Binder: $100
A workshop may be arranged for teachers so that they may best understand how to use the assessment tools and the instructional activities. In addition, in-class demonstrations may be useful for staff to see the tasks "in action"!
